You know, it really bugs me that now that the movie is out (and don't get me wrong, I LOVED the film), everyone is suddenly "OMGILOVEIRONMAN!" Some people even think it's based off the Black Sabbath song. Bah! Do they even know who Don Heck is?! Well, I'm a looong time Iron Man fan. I love Marvel comics and ol' shellhead is my favorite! As such, I wanted to do a piece of fan art of the original IM.
I wanted to recreate and update him in his most stunning and majesterial image ever put on paper, the cover of Tales of Suspense #39, his very first appearance! I thought about redrawing the whole thing, as many have before me... but then I asked myself, "Why?" I know I can never outdo the masterful lineworks of THE Jack 'The King' Kirby, the greatest comic artist of all time. (If you don't appreciate his work, you need to go back to art school, buddy). So I decided to painstakingly seperate his lines-- the process wasn't even totally successful-- and paint under it. It's really a shame the colouration technology we have now wasn't around at the time, this is how the cover deserved to look all along!
I pretty much redid everythign but the illustrations for sctatch. You can see the original here: [link] Note that the biggest major difference is that I crossed out the Comics Code Authority on mine... Why? Because FUCK the comics code authority, that's why! If you're not a comic n00b, you understand.
Anywho. IM is copyright Marvel Comics and the original artwork was done by Jack Kirby and lined by Don Heck.
The comics code authority: too much power for too long.
